New EU-Minister

2010-02-02
Birgitta Ohlsson, MP and spokesperson for the Liberal Party in foreign affairs, has been named EU-minister by the Swedish government. She is a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee in Parliament and head of the Liberal party’s women organization.

According to the Liberal party home page, when asked what she would wish for she used to say that she would like to be Minister for International Development Cooperation. A wish that didn’t come true, but almost.
“Issues close to my heart are humans rights, freedom and democracy”, said Birgitta Ohlsson when asked what her priorities will be as a minister. She is known as an outspoken person and has stated that she wants to call attention to the situation of the Romanies in Europe as well as the fact that women are sold for prostitution in the capitals of Europe, reported the Swedish daily paper Svenska Dagbladet.
The fact that she is pregnant and will give birth in July is something she does not perceive as a problem: "I am married to a modern man, not a dinosaur," Birgitta Ohlsson commented on her blog.
