Gunilla Carlsson Appointed to UN High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability
Secretary-general of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, has elected Minister for Development Assistance Gunilla Carlsson to be part of the United Nations’ new high-level panel on global sustainability.

Cuba – No Less Oppressive
Earlier this month the Castro regime, after mediation by the Catholic Church, announced that it would release 52 political prisoners and “allow them” to leave the island. This is a remarkable u-turn by the regime, since Cuba so far denied having any political prisoners at all.

Speech on the Agenda for Belarusians
On July 23-25, the Foundation arranged a seminar for future Belarusian speakers and instructors. The seminar was the first of two parts and aimed at helping the young activists to convey their knowledge to others. The Foundation has previously organised training sessions on political knowledge, including ideology, and is now taking the next step to begin building a domestic organization aimed at training.

Conference for African Women and Youths
July 23-25 the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation arranged a youth conference and a women’s conference in cooperation with New Democratic Party (NDP), Moderaterna’s cooperation party in the Seychelles. The theme of the two conferences was organization and political campaigning. NDP’s president, Ralph Volcere, acted as opening speaker for both events.

Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation as a Good Example
Carl Bildt, Minister of Foreign Affairs, attended a conference held in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Community of Democracies in Kraków, Poland on July 3-4, 2010. Mr. Bildt spoke about the importance of helping those working to build democratic societies and the challenges they face. He highlighted two aspects of this work, one of which is the importance of organisations such as the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation.
