On December 6, Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation will arrange a seminar on the political situation in Nicaragua.

Daniel Ortega won the Presidential election in Nicaragua in 2006, with financial and moral support from his close ally, the ex-President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez. Now, Ortega is striving to change the constitution in order to end the limits of presidential terms. If he succeeds it would allow him to stay in power indefinitely.

Azalia Aviles, chairman of the International Women’s Democrat Union, and Javier Baez Castellon, a political analyst and youth activist in Nicaragua, are coming to Sweden to give their views on the constitutional changes in Nicaragua.

The seminar will be held in English and a light lunch will be served.

Cuba is a centralized, planned economy and communist one-party state where no other parties are permitted. After Fidel Castro’s illness in 2008, hope of reform was spread, but the small changes that have occurred since then are merely symbolic actions without any real value.

On October 9 and 10, the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation organizes a seminar in Stockholm respectively in Uppsala with Jorge Luís García Pérez, leader of Cuba’s civic resistance movement and Iris Tamara Pérez Aguilera, founder and President of the Rosa Parks Women’s Movement, who will give their views on the developments in the country.

The seminar will be held in English.
