Thursday, November 19, the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation arranged the conference Russia’s Direction – Putin’s Objectives & the European Response. The conference was well attended and received high rating from the participants.
On June 4, the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation hosted a half-day seminar for elected representatives of the Moderate party. The participants came from all across Sweden and the purpose was to increase the knowledge about the Foundation’s international operations and to throw light upon the new challenges it stands before. Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation hosted a lunch seminar, May 27, on the developments in Ukraine with David J. Kramer, President of Freedom House.
On December 6, Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation will arrange a seminar on the political situation in Nicaragua.
Daniel Ortega won the Presidential election in Nicaragua in 2006, with financial and moral support from his close ally, the ex-President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez. Now, Ortega is striving to change the constitution in order to end the limits of presidential terms. If he succeeds it would allow him to stay in power indefinitely.
Azalia Aviles, chairman of the International Women’s Democrat Union, and Javier Baez Castellon, a political analyst and youth activist in Nicaragua, are coming to Sweden to give their views on the constitutional changes in Nicaragua.
The seminar will be held in English and a light lunch will be served.

October 9 in Stockholm and October 10 in Uppsala, the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation arranged two well attended seminars regarding the civic nonviolent resistance in Cuba with emphasis on human rights.
The seminar in Stockholm was moderated by Gustav Blix, member of the Swedish parliament and of the foundation’s board, and in Uppsala by Ulrika Karlsson, member of the Swedish parliament. Invited guests were Jorge Luís García Pérez, leader of the Cuba’s Civic Resistance Movement, Iris Tamara Pérez Aguilera, founder and president of the Rosa Parks Women’s Movement and John Suaréz, human rights director in the Cuban Democratic Directorate. Cuba is a centralized, planned economy and communist one-party state where no other parties are permitted. After Fidel Castro’s illness in 2008, hope of reform was spread, but the small changes that have occurred since then are merely symbolic actions without any real value.
On October 9 and 10, the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation organizes a seminar in Stockholm respectively in Uppsala with Jorge Luís García Pérez, leader of Cuba’s civic resistance movement and Iris Tamara Pérez Aguilera, founder and President of the Rosa Parks Women’s Movement, who will give their views on the developments in the country.
