Wednesday, March 14th, the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation hosted a well-attended seminar on current dynamics in Turkish politics and society. Five prominent experts from Turkey presented their analysis on the state of affairs and the country’s relationship with the EU. The seminar was moderated by Thomas Gür.
November 6-10 and 13-17 the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation held conferences on ideology for politically active youth from the Balkans and the Eastern Neighborhood in Nynäshamn, south of Stockholm. The basis of the seminars was the book Principles for a Free Society by Dr Nigel Ashford and the lectures were led by leading opinion makers and Swedish politicians. The conferences aim to strengthen the ideological base among the participants with emphasis on understanding of democracy, human rights and market economy.
On December 1, the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation hosted the lunch seminar Venezuela – When will Maduro give way to democracy? The panel that discussed the developments in Venezuela included Carlos Eduardo Berrizbeitia, MP (Venezuela), Chairman, Special Committee to Investigate the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court and José Ramón García Hernández, MP (Spain), Parliamentary Spokesman for Foreign Affairs, Partido Popular. On November 15, the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation hosted the seminar Russia – Trends, Challenges & The Future for the Democratic Opposition. The panel that discussed the developments in Russia included Mikhail Kasyanov, Former Prime Minister of Russia and Chairman of the PARNAS party, Ilya Ponomarev, Former Member of the State Duma, Lilia Shevtsova, Associate of the Russia and Eurasia Program at the Chatham House and Karin Enström, Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs in the Swedish Parliament. Thursday, October 13, the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation hosted a lunch seminar on the Georgian parliamentary elections that took place on October 8th. Thornike Gordadze, Senior Advisor for Education, Research and Studies at the French Institut des Hautes Études de Défense Nationale (IHEDN) and Former State Minister for Euro-Atlantic Integration of Georgia described the elections and the results. On February 15, Bosnia-Herzegovina formally applied for EU-membership. The Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation has a long tradition of supporting European integration and coalition building in the country, and hosted on June 14 a seminar on the further integration process.
Invited to the seminar was Branislav Borenovic, President of the Party of Democratic Progress (PDP) and Chariman of the Committee for European integration and regional co-operation in the National Assembly of Republika Srpska. He presented his perspective on the latest developments. PDP is a coalition partner in the current government of Bosnia-Herzegovina. The seminar was moderated by Diana Janse, Senior Foreign Policy Adviser of the Moderate Party.
A new report describing Bosnia-Herzegovina’s road to European integration, published by the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation, was released at the seminar.
On May 13, the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation hosted a breakfast seminar on Turkey, Islamism and the refugee crisis. Turkey is a key player in the refugee crisis, and is using its role to strengthen its leverage towards the EU. The deteriorating state of democracy and human rights in the country raises concerns at the same time as more and more power concentrates around the president himself. (more…)
