November 6-10 and 13-17 the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation held conferences on ideology for politically active youth from the Balkans and the Eastern Neighborhood in Nynäshamn, south of Stockholm. The basis of the seminars was the book Principles for a Free Society by Dr Nigel Ashford and the lectures were led by leading opinion makers and Swedish politicians. The conferences aim to strengthen the ideological base among the participants with emphasis on understanding of democracy, human rights and market economy.

Moldova is going through a difficult time. Corruption scandals have followed each other, forming a government has failed repeatedly since the parlamentary elections in November 2014, and nearly one billion dollar, fifteen percent of Moldova’s GDP, has disappeared from one of the country’s banks, questioning the role of the Moldovan political elite. Association for Liberal Thinking (ALT) is one of the leading think-tanks in Turkey and attracts students from all over the country to its seminars. The base is in Ankara, but April 11-13 2014, a number of students and university professors met in Istanbul to discuss the core values of democracy. March 11-18, Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation hosted two conferences for youth politicians from Eastern Europe and Sweden, on the principles for a free society together with Nigel Ashford from Institute for Humane Studies at George Mason University. Basic concepts for a liberal democracy, as private property, free enterprise and toleration where among the issues discussed.

October 25 – 27, 2013, Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation arranged a youth conference in Belgrade for youth from the Moderate’s sister party United Regions of Serbia (URS). The conference went under the theme of “ideology and policymaking” and was the first step in a four step program to promote democracy and European integration in the Balkan region. Accompanying speakers were Mr. Jonas Nilsson, director of public affairs at the Swedish Railways, and Mr. Veiko Lukmann, international secretary of Pro Patria and Res Publica Union in Estonia. In Turkey, the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation is co-operating with the Turkish think tank Association for Liberal Thinking (ALT) with the aim of strengthening the knowledge of freedom, democracy and market economy among Turkish youth with considerable political interest. (more…)
