March 15-17, the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation hosted a round-table conference in Visby on developments in EU’s Eastern Neighbourhood. The discussions focused on the shifting geopolitical landscape, current trends in the Eastern Partnership countries and Russia. Ukraine’s Vice PM Ivanna Klympush, Estonian Defence Minister Margus Tsahkna, Moderate Party Leader Anna Kinberg Batra and Carl Bildt, former Swedish PM and Foreign Minister, took part in the conference.
February 21-25, the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation hosted a study visit to Stockholm for a group of youth politicians from Macedonia. The program focused on local politics and the group met with representatives from the Moderate Party and the Moderate Youth League, and visited the Swedish Parliament as well as Stockholm City Hall.
As the totalitarian rule in Azerbaijan continues its oppression on the country’s democratic forces and imprisonment of journalists valuing the freedom of speech, the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation arranged on December 3-4 a conference on democratic and ideological values in Baku. On November 25-27, the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation hosted a conference in Pristina, Kosovo, together with the youth branch of its co-operation organisation in the country, the Democratic League of Kosovo. The theme of the conference was Principles for a Free Society, and aimed to educate the co-operation organisation’s youth in democratic values and human rights. (more…)

The panel that discussed the developments in Venezuela included Carlos Eduardo Berrizbeitia, MP (Venezuela), Chairman, Special Committee to Investigate the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court and José Ramón García Hernández, MP (Spain), Parliamentary Spokesman for Foreign Affairs, Partido Popular. The panel that discussed the developments in Russia included Mikhail Kasyanov, Former Prime Minister of Russia and Chairman of the PARNAS party, Ilya Ponomarev, Former Member of the State Duma, Lilia Shevtsova, Associate of the Russia and Eurasia Program at the Chatham House and Karin Enström, Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs in the Swedish Parliament. Thursday, October 13, the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation hosted a lunch seminar on the Georgian parliamentary elections that took place on October 8th.
