On March 20 to 23, a delegation of prominent independent Belarusian journalists came to Stockholm invited by the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation. During their time in Stockholm they had meetings with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Members of the Swedish Parliament and organizations and experts in the media field.
Independent journalists in Belarus are constantly harassed, intimidated, fined and jailed. Unaccredited freelancers cooperating with foreign media are subject to government pressure and defamation laws intimidate the free press. The government maintains a virtual monopoly on domestic broadcast media and the opposition has no access to the mass media.
