Panel led by Mr Tobias Billström, First Deputy Speaker of the Swedish Parliament

The Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation hosted on February 26-28 its annual regional women’s round-table conference in Stockholm. Invited were female representatives from our co-operation organisations in the Balkans. The topics discussed were the current affairs of the European Union with emphasis on the migrant and refugee crisis.

Invited key speakers were Mr Tobias Billström, First Deputy Speaker of the Swedish Parliament and Former Minister for Migration, and Dr Marija Boban, Assistant Professor at the University of Split in Croatia. Mr Billström spoke about the challenges facing Europe in the backwash of the war in Syria and Dr Boban held a key-note speech on Croatia’s first five years in the European Union. The talks were opened by Mr Göran Lennmarker, Chairman of the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation.

The Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation has a strong tradition of strengthening women networks in developing countries and countries in transition. To support democratic forces and traditional weak groups in new democracies is more important than ever in times when autocratic forces and neighbouring leaders try to destabilise regions and countries in their favour.
