Georgian Dream tightens its grip on Georgia’s largest independent TV-channel

Tbilisi’s city court’s controversial judge Tamaz Urtmelidze dismissed last night the management of Georgia’s largest independent TV-channel Rustavi2. The controversial judicial decision came as a surprise without notice. The new management expects to consist of government proxies and leaders loyal with the ruling party. The ruling party Georgian Dream gains with this action nearly monopoly on the Georgian media landscape and the actions are condemned by numerous of NGO’s in the country. The U.S. Ambassador to Tbilisi, Ian Kelly, issued a “deep concern” and warned of “profound political implications.
