During the night of October 2, the local office of the opposition party National Independence Party of Azerbaijan in the Sabail district of Baku was teared down, without any warning from the authorities. The office was situated at Khanlar street, close to the Crystal Hall, where this years Eurovision Song Contest was held.

The party office had been situated on the same address since 1992 and a huge amount of documents as well as other  material were destroyed due to the demolishment.

No state authority in Azerbaijan has been willing to answer why and by whom the office was teared down, and the party has appealed to the prosecutor’s office and the local police department.

The National Independence Party of Azerbaijan sees this event as a further step for Ilham Aliyev’s regime to restrict the activities of the political opposition in the country.
