Mr. Enrique Riera, leader of the group Movimiento Dignidad Republicana in the Partido Colorado of Paraguay steps down from his presidential bid in favor of leading his party group in the upcoming race to the senate. While postponing his presidential ambitions to 2018, Mr. Riera expects his group to get at least five of its candidates on the Partido Colorado list.
Mr. Riera has been vice minister for youth, member of congress as well as Mayor in the capital Asunción. His party group is also a member of the Latin American organization for center-right parties, Unión de Partidos Latinoamericanos (UPLA) and the International Democrat Union (IDU).
Partido Colorado in Paraguay consists of a number of groups that compete for the party’s leadership and nominations. Hence, Paraguay’s political system is in many ways different from other Latin American states.
