Successful meetings in Brussels for the Azeri opposition

May 7-10, the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation arranged a party leadership visit to Brussels for the National Independence Party of Azerbaijan (NIPA). The goal with the visit was to strengthen the party’s contacts with European institutions and politicians. NIPA is an opposition party to the Azeri dictatorship and since many years a member of the International Democrat Union (IDU). One of the party’s goals for its international cooperation is to become an observer member of the European People’s Party (EPP).

During the visit in Brussels, the Azeri politicians met with a handful of prominent members of the European Parliament from the EPP-group, as Mrs. Corien Wortmann-Kool, vice president of the EPP and Mr. Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, vice chairman of Euronest. Meetings were also held at the European Commission and at the EPP-office.

The delegation from NIPA consisted of Mr. Yusif Baghirzade, party chairman, Mr. Arzukhan Ali-Zada, general secretary, Mr. Elshan Mustafayev, international secretary and Ms. Ilhama Aliyeva from the party’s international office.
